Why Run Differential Is Terrible For Youth Baseball Tournaments
Youth Baseball tournaments are all screwed up - one of the big problems is run differential, or the difference between the amount of runs scored and the amount of runs allowed. This settles tie-breakers in pool play, but causes lots of downstream problems for player development.

    You can't teach someone who throws 65-70 mph to throw 90. You're either born with or you're not. My fastball was like most pitchers changeup. 65-70 was as hard as i could throw when i played

    So in our youth league the 3rd to 1st move is still legal. Can a pitcher fake to 3rd, turn/ replace feet (now disengaged from rubber) and seeing R1 has taken off already then run at him and throw to 2nd basemen who has cut down the basepath? Or does the pitcher have to throw to first after the fake to 3rd? Hopefully that makes sense lol

    I've enjoyed your other videos, but this one really misses the mark for me. This dismisses the dangers of baseball and the likelihood of certain injuries without citing any data or studies. In fact, baseball is one of the most dangerous sports, particularly for young boys, as is supported by data about the rates of injury in sports. The part about facemasks on helmet particularly bothers me. Facial injuries are especially common in baseball and have the potential to be severe and expensive. Facemasks could drastically reduce those injuries by simply attaching to a piece of equipment players are already required to wear. But they're not common, and never used by major leaguers on TV, so we have a chicken and egg problem where nobody wants to stand out by using one. I was hoping this video would talk about the rate of facial injuries in baseball and point out that facemasks, while uncommon, can reduce that risk substantially. Instead it just seems to perpetuate the false notion that baseball isn't dangerous and misinforms parents about the risks.

    • @DanBlewett
      @DanBlewett 3 дні тому

      Here are two research studies that back up my experience and observation: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/8784371/ and pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15262641/ You're entitled to your opinion, but the research doesn't agree. The research matches what I've observed in 30 years in baseball. Facial injuries in baseball are rare, and the majority of them happen to defensive players (bad hops and throws) NOT hitters. Not my opinion - please read both studies above.

    Thoughts on some drills etc to help a youth pitcher see and understand how to thrust the chest forward to fix the “too tall” issue at delivery? Do we focus on drift….as in hips sliding to the plate? Do we mention the back leg/knee and need to bend it a bit more to allow for downward movement to then push off the rubber and drive the body down? How to go about this at the specific point that helps without risking undoing any progress made on delivery mechanics in general?

  • @RyanRobbins007
    @RyanRobbins007 3 дні тому

    This video contains probably the biggest misconception about balks as they relate to a pitcher's "natural motion." The pitcher can change how he comes set with each pitch if he wants. He can do a slide step, a low leg kick, a high leg kick, etc., from pitch to pitch. If he commits a balk, he commits a balk. There is no such thing as "If he does it each time, it's legal." Doing something illegal all of the time doesn't miraculously make it legal. Nor does doing something legal and different from pitch to pitch suddenly make it illegal. The "natural motion" refers to delivering the actual pitch, as in he fakes delivering a pitch.

    There is also the location of the fastball for the signs. So I am guessing - 1. For a high fastball - a fist up and one finger straight up. The inverse of the traditional fastball signal. 2. Or a low fastball - the traditional sign for a fastball - one straight finger downward, but bring it close to the plate's dirt to tell the pitcher to throw that fast ball close to the grass. NOTE: Low fastballs are risky because there is a risk you can get a passed ball or even a wild pitch - so use low fast balls sparingly unless you can imagine hitting exactly the target where the catcher will know you will go way down with the ball towards the dirt and the catcher can react safely to it with one's glove, and can use one's body to stop the ball if there is a chance that ball will ricochet wildly past the catcher.

    • @DanBlewett
      @DanBlewett 4 дні тому

      I believe I covered elevating fastballs in this video. there is no sign for low fastball - no one intentionally throws them. it's not a thing.

    I have been saying this for years. In high level /pro ball if you run up the score, steal, bunt, after you are up by 6 or more runs you get hit in the ribs next time at bat! Youth tournaments have got it all wrong and teaching wrong lessons to kids. Never run up the score past 6 runs.

    • @DanBlewett
      @DanBlewett 5 днів тому

      I strongly disagree with your notion of 6 runs being a limit in youth games - 6 run innings are super common, just a few walks, errors and hits and 6 runs come in.

    • @user-wf1jr3qd7m
      @user-wf1jr3qd7m 5 днів тому

      You have misunderstood me…didn’t say limit the score. I said stop running up the score after 6 by stealing, bunting etc. Go base to base after 6.

    • @DanBlewett
      @DanBlewett 4 дні тому

      I understood you - I disagree with both of your explanations. 6 run lead is absolutely not the time to stop stealing, etc. Not even in the MLB would they shut it down at 6. 10 runs is a more reasonable number for youth.

  • @apav0519

    We just played a tournament this past weekend on feilds with 180ft fences. Our best player hit a home run in his first at bat, and the opponent intentionally walked him with the bases loaded in the last inning. We lost 10-2. You read that right. They were up 10-1 and intentionally walked in a run. The home run in the first was the only run we had scored. They got the next kid out to end the game...HOORAY! Parents cheered and seemed to have no issue with it. Smart baseball, right? Did I mention these are 10 year olds? Again, not a typo. We were the last seed for bracket play, played the same team in the first round, and they did it again when they again already had a sizeable lead. I spoke with the tournament director, who agreed he would talk to his rules committee about banning intenional walks for all 12 and under tournaments.

    totally agree with almost all of this! I would add that hardly any of the tournaments don't always follow USA baseball pitch counts. some are total innings and some are total outs. anything over 20 pitches is a day off. hardly anyone follows this in weekend tournaments. kids arms are needlessly taxed.
